Photographs freeze moments in time. They are
actual images of reality in a single moment. I always love really old
photographs from the time when cameras were first introduced because they
highlight an era that is so intriguing. We learn so much from looking at those
old photos – how people dressed and lived, where they worked, what the world
looked like.
Think of all the photographs that we take now.
Think of all the ways we can take photos – cell phones, computers, digital
cameras, key chains, iPods…the list just grows. Imagine a hundred years from
now when your photos are discovered by someone. What will they think about you
and your life? All those duck-faced selfies and photographs of folks’ dinners out
there could be quite interesting to someone in the future. I can’t imagine what
they’ll think of us and how we dress and live, where we work, and what our
world looks like.
In honor of Veteran’s Day, here is one of my
favorite photographs by Alfred Eisenstaedt titled V-J Day in Times Square (1945).
