Eva Gonzalès (1849-1883)
is not one of the most well-known female artists in history—but that’s only
because she lived a very short life. That's also the reason there really isn’t
too much information out there about her.
She was born in Paris,
the daughter of writer, Emmanuel Gonzalès. When she was 16, she began taking
drawing lessons. When she was 20, she began studying under Édouard Manet
who was a key figure in the evolution from Realism to Impressionism. She was
his only student and modeled for the other Impressionists from time to
time. She married Henri Guérard
in the 1870s, but died in 1883 in childbirth at the age of 34—six days after
her teacher, Manet.
It is said that she did 124 works during her lifetime –a mixture
of paintings, drawings, and watercolors.
